Material Chemical Categories

SARA 313 requires facilities to report on certain chemical categories, such as Lead Compounds. The Lead Compounds category includes any unique chemical substance that has lead as part of its molecular structure. For the purposes of generating the SARA 312 Tier Two, use a chemical category to group materials that are reportable as one item. All of the materials' data, such as CAS numbers and hazard categories, are reported based on the properties of the reportable group.

To make a material available as a chemical category in Essential, enter the material's name and designate it as a Chemical Category and a Mixture on the Material form.

On the Material Chemical Categories form, select each chemical included in a category and then define what percentage of each material's mass is related to the chemical category. For example, "PbSeO4" would be a component of the Lead Compounds chemical category because it is 59.17% lead by weight.

To add components to a material chemical category

Tip:  When accessing the Material Chemical Categories form from the Material form, begin with step 3.

  1. Click Data Entry > Material Information > Material Chemical Categories in the Navigation Tree.

The Material Chemical Categories list appears.

  2. Locate the material chemical category on the list and click the category link to open the Material Chemical Categories form.

  3. Review the Effective Date. The default is the material effective date. Select a different date from the list when applicable.

  4. Expand the Chemical Category Components section when necessary and click Add Chemical Category Components.

  5. Select a material from the list for the Component field.

  6. Enter a numeric value in the Amount field that represents the percentage of the material's mass that is related to the category. The amount must be greater than or equal to zero.

  7. Select the Unit of measure from the list.

If the unit is not listed, click the Ellipsis button and add it.

  8. Enter a De Minimis value for the material. The amount must be greater than or equal to zero.

  9. Click OK.

The component is displayed as a line item in the Chemical Category Components section. Edit existing component information using the buttons adjacent to the line item.

  10. Repeat steps 4 through 9 to add other components to the same chemical category.
