Review the list of base units available for entering measurements included in Essential on the Units of Measure form. Provide the formula for converting units to one of the base units on this form to enter values in units that are different from the base units. For example, to enter temperature readings in Celsius, provide the formula for converting that unit to Fahrenheit, which is the base unit for "Temperature".
Provide a name and assign a unit type and category to enter a new unit of measure. The unit type identifies what the unit will be used to measure, such as volume or area, and relates the unit to the base unit for the type. For example, if a unit called "MGAL" is entered, and "VOLUME" is selected as the unit type, the corresponding base unit would be "GALLONS". The category is either "IUPAC" (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) or "English".
The Manifest Code links the unit of measure to the reporting code used to describe the unit of measure on a waste manifest. For example, the code "P" designates "pounds" on the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest.
Once this information has been entered, specify how to convert values from the unit to the base unit. A sample calculation is displayed to verify that the conversion information is correct.
For each unit of measure, equivalent entries in different languages can be validated. For example, a "Percentage" unit in Spanish, "Porcentaje", and/or Norwegian, "Prosentdel", could be specified. When localization has been implemented, the Culture setting assigned to a user determines which value is displayed in field lists on Essential forms. Enter the corresponding units of measure and associate each one with the appropriate language in the Language Dependent Units Measure section.
Caution: Be sure to verify that the conversion information
is correct by checking the sample calculation. A
unit of measure cannot be changed or deleted once it has been saved.
However, language-dependent values can be edited at any time.
