Production Areas

On the Production Area form, set up one or more production areas (frequently referred to as "areas") within an entity. Production areas are composed of equipment assembled to produce an intermediate or end product as defined in the EPA regulations. They are typically known as a Unit at a facility. For example, SRU, or Sulfur Recovery Unit, consists of the group of equipment assembled for the purposes of recovering sulfur from an incoming process stream.

In other facilities, a production area is a section of the plant divided up for monitoring fugitive emissions. You may choose to divide up your entity this way because the system allows you to send components to a datalogger by production area.

Establishing Production Areas

To establish a production area, enter a name and description. A Production Area Code is required if you plan to send data to and receive data from a datalogger. Enter a code that monitoring and maintenance personnel would be familiar with or easily recognize. The field is limited to 8 characters. (This code is also used to represent the area on many standard reports included with the software.)

In the sections on the Production Area form, you can assign production units, establish subareas, enter any applicable physical location information, and assign personnel who work in the production area. Assign production units to a production area and you can use the production area to filter the list of production units you have to choose from while creating production schedules. When you divide a production area into subareas, you can use the designation to set up monitoring runs for fugitive emissions.

To establish production areas

  1. Use one of the following paths in the Navigation Tree to access the Production Areas list:

Air, FEMS modules

Compliance Manager, Industrial Hygiene, Process Data Manager, Task Manager modules

  1. Click the New button.

The Production Area form is displayed.

  2. Select an Entity from the list.

If the appropriate entity is not listed, click the Ellipsis button and add it.

  3. Enter a Production Area name and a Production Area Code.

A Production Area Code is required if you plan to send data to and receive data from a datalogger.

  4. Type a Description for the production area.

  5. Click the Save button on the form.

  6. Add information to the Production Units, Location, Contacts, and Subareas sections.

  7. Click the Save button on the form.

  8. Repeat steps 2 through 8 to add other production areas.

Assigning Production Units

You can group production units into production areas for different reasons. For example, you can assign production units to production areas to filter the list of production units you have to choose from when creating production schedules. Or, if a production unit represents a process line that crosses through many buildings or areas of the entity, you can assign one production unit to several areas through which it flows. For example, in an area, there may be a Toluene process line. The line may originate in the production area and the materials carried may flow to another production area in the facility. You can also group production units into production areas for reporting, such as in a cost center or sector of the plant.

Assign production units to a production area in the Production Units section on the Production Area form. Before you begin, you must validate a list of production units in operation at your facility on the Production Unit form.

To assign production units to a production area

  1. Locate your production area on the Production Areas list, click the area link to open the Production Area form, and expand the Production Units section if necessary.

  2. Click Add Production Units to select existing production units.

Use the Edit Production Units link to establish a new production unit. Refer to Production Units for additional information.

  3. Click the check box adjacent to a production unit to select it. Remove a selection by clicking the check box to clear it. Only production units with a checkmark in the check box adjacent to the unit name will be added.

  4. Click Add Production Units.

Each production unit is displayed as a line item in the Production Units section. Click the Delete button adjacent to the line item to remove the unit from the production area.

  5. Click the Save button on form.

Adding Location Information

If the production area encompasses a specific location, you can enter its UTM or standard coordinates in the Location section on the Production Area form. Location information is used for reporting and can help locate a production area at a facility.

To add location information

  1. Locate your production area on the Production Areas list, click the area link to open the Production Area form, and expand the Location section if necessary.

  2. Enter the appropriate Latitude and Longitude data in the fields provided and select a directional abbreviation from the list.

  3. Enter UTM information in the fields provided.

  4. Click the Save button on the form.

Associating Contacts with a Production Area

In the Contacts section on the Production Area form, select the names of people who are responsible for some function related to the production area, such as maintenance personnel. To designate the exact job function of each contact, select a contact type along with the individual's name.

Establish contacts on the Contacts and Personnel form and contact types on the Contact Type form.

To add contacts to a production area

  1. Locate your production area on the Production Areas list, click the area link to open the Production Area form, and expand the Contacts section if necessary.

  2. Click Add Contact and select a Contact Name from the list.

If the applicable contact is not listed, click the Ellipsis button and add the contact.

  3. Select a Contact Type from the list.

If the appropriate contact type is not listed, click the Ellipsis button and add it.

  4. Click OK.

The contact information is displayed as a line item in the Contacts section. Edit existing contacts and contact types using the buttons adjacent to the line item.

  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 to add other contacts.

  6. Click the Save button on the form.

Dividing a Production Area into Subareas

Within a production area, there are often one or more smaller groups called subareas. Subareas typically categorize the location of FEMS components in the area, such as on a particular floor of a building or physical segment of the area, but they can also represent other logical divisions.

Enter one or more subareas in the Subarea section on the Production Area form. A short Subarea Code is required if you plan to send and receive data using a datalogger. This code is also used on the standard reports included with the software. The code is limited to 8 characters.

To enter subareas within a production area

  1. Locate your production area on the Production Areas list, click the area link to open the Production Area form, and expand the Sub Area section if necessary.

  2. Click Add Sub Area and enter the Sub Area name and Sub Area Code.

A short Subarea Code is required if you plan to send and receive data using a datalogger. The code is limited to 8 characters.

  3. Enter a Description of the subarea.

  4. Click OK.

The information is displayed as a line item in the Sub Area section. Edit existing subarea information using the buttons adjacent to the line item.

  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 to add other subareas.

  6. Click the Save button on the form.

Adding Materials

For the FEMS module, the Materials section is available to associate materials to your production areas for use when setting up material process streams (i.e., nodes). The list of materials available is limited to the materials associated with the entity and any material without an entity association. Refer to Entity Materials for additional information.

To add materials

  1. Locate your production area on the Production Areas list, click the area link to open the Production Area form, and expand the Materials section if necessary.

  2. Click Add Materials.

  3. Click the check box adjacent to a material to select it. Remove a selection by clicking the check box to clear it. Only materials with a checkmark in the check box adjacent to the material name will be added.

  4. Click the Add Materials button.

Each material is displayed as a line item in the Materials section. Click the Delete button adjacent to the line item to remove the material from the production area.

  5. Click the Save button on the form.
