Non-chemical Stressor Details

Document information about the properties, exposure limits, and hazards associated with a non-chemical stressor on the Non-chemical Stressor Details form. Since property values, exposure limits, and hazards for a given stressor may change over time, specify an effective date to maintain a historical record.

For instruction on entering non-chemical stressor details, click the following links or use the scroll bar to scan the page.

  5. Enter an Effective Date or click the Calendar button and select a date.

  6. Enter a number that represents the Health Hazard Rating.

  7. Enter information in the Property Values, Exposure Limits, and Hazards sections

  8. Click the Save button on the form.

  9. Repeat steps 2 through 8 to add details for other non-chemical stressors.

Entering Property Data

Enter results for properties of a non-chemical stressor in the Property Values section on the Non-chemical Stressor Details form. Properties are characteristics of a stressor that are fixed, such as "particle size distribution" or "biological time constant". If the result is a number, enter a typical, minimum, and maximum value. For non-numerical results, enter a text-based value. For example, for the physical property "Appearance", the result might be the stressor's color.

Note:  A list of stressor properties should already be displayed based on the properties validated on the Stressor Type form. You can enter additional properties or remove existing properties from this list.

Enter stressor properties on the Non-chemical Stressor Properties form. Assign stressor properties to stressors of a certain type on the Stressor Type form. When establishing a stressor of a given type, the stressor properties for that type are referenced.

To enter non-chemical stressor property values

  1. Locate the stressor on the Non-chemical Stressor Details list, click the link to display the Non-chemical Stressor Details form, and expand the Property Values section if necessary.

  2. Click the Add Property Values link to open the Property Values form.

  3. Select a stressor Property from the list. If the desired property is not listed, click the Ellipsis button to add it on the Non-chemical Stressor Properties form.

  4. Select the corresponding Units of measure from the list. If the applicable unit is not listed, click the Ellipsis button to add it on the Units of Measure form.

  5. Enter Typical, Maximum, and Minimum numeric results or a Text Value result.

  6. Click OK.

Property value information is displayed as a line item in the Property Values section. Change existing property value information using the buttons adjacent to the line item.

  7. Repeat steps 2 through 6 to add other property values.

  8. Click the Save button on the form.

Entering Exposure Limits

Enter the exposure limits that various governing bodies have set for the stressor in the Exposure Limits section on the Non-chemical Stressor Details form. For example, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has developed an exposure limit called Threshold Limit Value (TLV) often expressed as TWA. TWA is the time-weighted average concentration for a normal 8-hour workday and a 40-hour work week to which nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed without adverse effect. Document the limits developed by organizations such as ACGIH or establish your own facility-specific limits.

To make the exposure limit available for sample results and time-weighted average results, associate a sample type with the exposure limit. This association creates a list of acceptable exposure limits on the Exposure Session Sample Results and Exposure Session TWA Results forms.

When selecting the Available for IH option, the designated exposure limit will be available for samples of the associated type on the Exposure Session Sample Results form. Likewise, selecting the Available for TWA option makes the designated exposure limit available for samples of the associated type on the Exposure Session TWAs form.

Before you begin, make sure you have established a list of exposure limits on the Exposure Limits form and assigned them to the appropriate regulatory body or agency on the Governing Bodies form.

To enter exposure limits for non-chemical stressors

  1. Locate the stressor on the Non-chemical Stressor Details list, click the link to display the Non-chemical Stressor Details form, and expand the Exposure Limits section if necessary.

  2. Click the Add Exposure Limits link to open the Exposure Limits form.

  3. Select a Governing Body and Exposure Limit from the list for each field.

If the appropriate value is not listed, click the Ellipsis button and add it.

  4. Enter a Value for the exposure limit and select a corresponding Units of measure from the list.

If the desired unit of measure is not listed, click the Ellipsis button to add it to the Units of Measure form.

  5. Select a Sample Type from the list.

If the appropriate sample type is not listed, click the Ellipsis button to add it on the Sample Type form.

  6. Select a Noise Exchange Rate from the list when sample results for the stressor are to be included in noise-related TWA calculations.

Tip:  The non-chemical stressor must also be identified as a noise-related stressor on the Non-chemical Stressor form. Refer to Non-Chemical Stressors for additional information.

  7. Use the following guidelines to select one or more of the remaining options:

  1. Click OK.

Exposure limit information is displayed as a line item in the Exposure Limits section. Change existing exposure limits using the buttons adjacent to the line item.

  2. Repeat steps 2 through 8 to add other exposure limits.

  3. Click the Save button on the form.

Assigning Hazards

Define any number of physical, health, and other hazards published for a non-chemical stressor in the Hazards section on the Non-chemical Stressor Details form. For each hazard, document the governing body that lists the hazard and a reference for assigning the hazard, such as a CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) reference. For example, document that OSHA publishes the non-chemical stressor "Noise" as a hearing loss-inducing health hazard, referenced by 29 CFR Title 29 CFR 1910.95.

Note:  Hazards must be associated with the governing bodies that publish them in the Hazards section on the Governing Bodies form before you can assign hazards to a non-chemical stressor.

By defining the specific hazards associated with a stressor, the industrial hygienist at your facility is better able to understand the risks posed by exposure to that stressor and can use this information to communicate risks. When these risks are understood, the industrial hygienist can determine which stressors are most important to control in order to limit the possibility of adverse health effects.

Assign hazards to chemical stressors in the Hazards subsection of the Regulatory Information section on the Material form.

To assign hazards to a non-chemical stressor

  1. Locate the stressor on the Non-chemical Stressor Details list, click the link to display the Non-chemical Stressor Details form, and expand the Hazards section if necessary.

  3. Select a Governing Body and a Hazard from the list for each field.

If the appropriate value is not listed, click the Ellipsis button next to the field and add it.

  4. Associate the hazard with a Reference, such as a publication that lists the hazard for the stressor.

  5. Click OK.

Hazard information is displayed as a line item in the Hazards section. Edit existing hazard information using the buttons adjacent to the line item.

  6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 to add other hazards.

  7. Click the Save button on the form.
